‍ ‍Lesson 5- Thy Will be Done

Matthew 6:9-13 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. (10)  Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. (11) Give us this day our daily bread. (12)  And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. (13)  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

What is the will of God? More specifically, what is the will of God for my life? Someone once said that if God would just tell him what it is that He wants, he would do it. God has done more than tell us His will, He has allowed it to be written down for all people to read, and He has preserved it throughout thousands of years. It is the Bible. God’s general will for mankind is that they may know Him in truth, and that they may choose to obey Him and His law willingly. God’s specific will for your life is that you would know God in truth, and that you would choose to have Him lead in your life in all things.

God wants you to know of His unconditional love for you, but He also wants you to know of His justice. Isn’t that the very same goal that a parent has towards their children? The parent who says they love their children but never corrects them when they do things that are wrong, proves himself to be a liar. If all God ever showed you was His love without showing you the structure of that love through discipline, you would never know the true God. God’s will for you begins with you knowing that He loves you so very much that He does not want you to be under the control of sin in your life. He wants you to be free from the sin that keeps you captive in your thoughts and actions, so He had a plan to set you free. However, His plan required that sinless human blood be shed as payment for sin. Since there is no way you or I could ever meet that requirement on our own, God sent His Son Jesus Christ to live a sinless life, and shed His sinless blood as payment for sin. All He requires from you is that you place your trust in what Jesus accomplished for you personally and allow God’s will to lead you through life.

“Thy will be done in earth” is a request that God’s will be accepted and followed throughout the entire earth by all people. When you first consider that statement it seems like an impossible task. But when you begin to break it down in your mind, it doesn’t seem that impossible. The statement “all of the people of the earth” appears to be this gigantic number that we can’t begin to understand. It is estimated that the world population is approximately 7,851,163,856, give or take a few. That is a number that we cannot comprehend. However, when you consider that this number is made up of individual people which includes you and me, it is much easier to see how God’s will can be accomplished upon the earth. One person at a time!

So, when you pray for God’s will to be done on the earth, you are actually praying for God’s will to be done in your life. When you allow God’s will to be done in your life, it is one person closer to God’s will being done in the earth among all people. It all begins with you.

How is God’s will to be worked out in your life? What is it that God expects from you within His will? Is there a list of dos and don’ts that must be kept? If you miss one of the rules, does that separate you from God and His love? What is it that God wants from you? Someone asked Jesus what the greatest commandment was, which would be the one thing that God would want from you. Here was Jesus’ answer.

Mark 12:30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.

Let’s break that down to see how it applies to you individually. First, God is to be loved. You can obey someone without loving them, but the love God wants from you is a love that chooses to obey Him and return His love to Him through your life.

“With all thy heart” not only is your belief in God, but also your trust in Him. The proof of your love for God is the trust you place in Him to lead and guide your life in all things, regardless of how you feel about them. Placing God’s leadership and His will first in your life shows your love for Him.

“With all thy soul” speaks of convictions. Things that you know are God’s will become the things that you do without compromise. Your feelings, desires, and wants all become God’s desires in your life.

“With all thy mind” are the thoughts you have. Your thoughts are the root of all of your actions. Right now, you had the thought to read this letter, and you have put that thought into action. When the thoughts of your mind are “filtered” through the Word of God you will know God’s will in all things, which will keep your actions on the right path.

“With all thy strength” means your body. It is through your actions, the things you do with your body, that allow other people, as well as God, to see where your true love really is. If your actions do not line up with the leadership of God, then it is obvious that your love is not focused upon Him. We all make mistakes, but consider the general direction of your life. Does your body demonstrate your love for God or a love for something else?

Romans 12:1-2 I beseech [ask] you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. (2)  And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

“Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven” speaks of the entire population of the earth, but that includes you. Don’t think of God’s will being done anywhere else but in you, because that is the first step to it being done in the earth.

2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

When you pray to God, He expects you to respond to the answer you asked Him for. While it may not be the answer you are expecting, or in the manner you were expecting it to be given, it is God’s will. For instance, you may see the need for more patience in your life. God does not wave some magic wand over you, and all of a sudden you have increased patience. He wants to answer your prayer, but the only way for you to develop increased patience is through trials and testing’s that will give you the opportunity to exercise patience through the power of God. Going through these trials will build your patience slowly, which means that there will be times of failure. However, just because you have failed, and did not exercise increased patience does not mean that God’s will to grant it to you has changed. Satan will try to get your focus on the failure instead of on the learning that God is providing in answer to your prayer.

You may need to go through many trials and testings before you realize that your patience has increased, and that God did answer your prayer. The only reason He answers your prayer is if what you are asking is within His will for you. the prayer you ask may show your need to God, and He may answer it in a manner that deals with the root of the request. For instance, you may ask God to allow you to hit the lottery for a huge amount of money. When that doesn’t happen, you assume that God has not answered your prayer, but He actually has. While you will never get that huge sum of lottery money you asked for, you will get something even better. You will have God allow things to come into your life that will demonstrate His ability to supply your every need. He wants you to depend upon Him for the things you need, not a lottery somewhere.

Philippians 4:19 But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. 

God knows your heart, and He knows the root of the things you ask for. Asking to hit the lottery has it’s root in many things, such as greed, laziness, and pride. None of those are within God’s will for your life. So, instead of granting you your request the way you asked for it, He will look at the root of the request, and answer it by changing your desire. You will begin to realize that God wants to be the only One who provides for you, and He wants you to know beyond any doubt that is where it comes from. As you grow and mature in your faith in God to meet all of your needs in His time, and in His way, you will begin to see His will in your life as an answer to your prayer.

God’s will for you is that you establish a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ by placing your trust in the sacrifice Jesus became for you on the cross. But that isn’t the end of God’s will for you, but rather, it is just the beginning. He wants you to grow in your knowledge of Him so you can see His will demonstrated in every aspect of your life.

Jesus demonstrated His submission to God the Father’s will for Him as He was about to be tortured and killed upon the cross. Jesus went to the Garden of Gethsemane and prayed in submission to God’s will.

Luke 22:41-42 And he was withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down, and prayed, (42) Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.

Jesus knew that what was ahead for Him was the most severe torture and death ever experienced by a human being, and yet that was not what He was asking to escape. His coming to the earth was for that particular purpose so that the sin that separated man from God can be paid for. What Jesus was asking was that the separation He was about to experience between Him and God His Father would not need to happen. Jesus had never known a time when He was not in total contact and fellowship with God the Father. But now because of the holiness of God, He cannot be in the presence of sin, or look upon it. Jesus became sin in our place, which meant that God had to turn away from His beloved Son.

Luke 23:44 And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.

The darkness was the visible proof to man that God had turned away from His Son. That part of the suffering Jesus experienced was worse than any other. And yet, Jesus knowing all things submitted His will to the will of His Father. It cost Him greatly, and yet He was obedient to God the Father’s will. That is the type of submission that Jesus demonstrated for you and me to know that the will of God is what we are asking for when we pray “thy will be done.”‍ ‍

The next time you pray to God for something, ask yourself if you are asking for God’s will to be done or are you asking selfishly, and also if you will be obedient to the manner in which He answers that prayer, allowing God to be God in your life.‍ ‍

Lesson 5- Thy Will be Done‍ ‍
